I married into a family that LOVES sweets, my children apparently inherited this gene as well. I am always on the look out for a healthier dessert that I can serve the family. While snuggled up the other night watching an evening cartoon with the kiddos before bed, Helen Cavallo of “That’s Fresh” had a quick segment on how to make Banana Helado (Ice Cream). It is a simple process with one ingredient! Simple, Delicious and Healthy. 1.) Slice bananas, place in storage bag and freeze. 2.) Place frozen bananas in a food processor and puree… Read More
Gallery Walls seem to be a popular theme in home decorating right now. Because they hold so much personality, I wanted to create one in my home, and I wanted to do it on a budget. Last summer, I found some frames at a garage sale that were old, outdated, filled with cross-stitch, and …… priced at 25 cents each! I quickly planned to snatch them up, remove the cross-stitch, and paint them a cheerful turquoise. (Sidenote… I did feel a slight twinge of guilt when the garage sale hostess said, “Oh, I made these in high school. I’m so… Read More
A few nights ago, right before bedtime, I announced, “Tomorrow we are going to Grandma’s house!” Lots of excitement ensued, and there were many questions such as: Can we ride in the combine? Will the cousins be there? Can we ride the 4-Wheeler? Can I wear an outfit like Grandpa? As I was tucking the kids in, I noticed that my five-year-old son had lain out an outfit that looked just like Grandpa’s. Priceless! The next morning, we quickly got our morning responsibilities finished, loaded up, and headed to Grandma’s farm, which is about 45 minutes from our suburban… Read More
A few months ago, a friend told me about this book…. Have you heard of it? Its quickly gaining popularity and is even on the New York Times Bestseller List. I got a copy for myself and have been learning a lot about nutrition and overall health for myself and family. It is very informative and encouraging and written in a fun way. Today for lunch we made the Trim Healthy Mama lettuce wraps from page 297 in the book. They were fun, fresh, and filling. We all loved them! Here are the ingredients. Have you ever seen a bug like this? I have seen several of these stick looking insects. They are pretty amazing, and blend in so well with their surroundings. Ava and I found another one on our walk the other day, and I really would like to figure out what the real name is for this ‘stick bug’.
It’s that time of year again when the season is changing. The leaves are covering the backyard. The temperature is cooler and I am enjoying hot coffee and tea more often. Why is the smell of cinnamon and nutmeg so cozy? I get into fall and the decorations. I like to try new things. This year I got white, orange, and striped pumpkins. I purchased one can of gold spray paint and another black chalkboard spray paint for decorating the pumpkins. This metal pumpkin I purchased last year from our local Ed & Eva’s shop – then I just added orange and black tulle,… Read More
During this time of the year, all of the men of the family are working so hard in the field to harvest the corn and soybeans. We wanted to make a special meal to take out to the field to recharge their batteries and to find new enthusiasm to finish the large task at hand. It is also such a beautiful time of year, and we all wanted to celebrate all of the beauty that surrounds us. So, we planned a Field Tailgating Party. Each of us gingham apron girls planned a few fall-feeling dishes and met up in a… Read More
